8 Reasons why YOU should come to Zumba® classes…

1. To lose weight.

The first and most obvious reason to go to any fitness class is to lose weight. A one hour Zumba® Fitness class can burn between 600 and 1000 calories using a range of different muscles to give a whole body workout. The programme is designed to incorporate a mix of low- and high- intensity routines which has been proven to be one of the most effective type of workout. To make it even better you hardly notice how hard you are working because the variety of music and dances has your mind constantly occupied for the duration of the class.

2. To tone up.

As well as giving you an excellent cardio-based workout, Zumba® Fitness introduces toning exercises such as squats, lunges and high knees into dance routines. Zumba® Fitness has created Zumba® Toning, a specialized programme that uses light weights and routines that will specifically focus on different muscle groups. The programme is not designed to help you bulk up but to tone your body and to give definition to your arms, legs and bottoms. Zumba® Toning classes follow the same formula as as a regular Zumba® class and will create the same party atmosphere that you will find at your Zumba® class.

3. To improve co-ordination.

Like any type of dancing or movement, Zumba® requires you to co-ordinate your feet with your arms to create a routine. However the repetitive nature of Zumba® means that students can familiarize themselves with the steps and improve on them in each class. The basic core steps which lay the foundation of most routines will not change dramatically but will be tweaked slightly to challenge your mind, for example a Merengue six step will not change but variations, such as adding an arm sequence, can be added to push you a little more and to keep your mind concentrating. Also we repeat the dances every week only changing one or two dances per class so you will get to know the songs and the routines.

 

4. To improve your mood.

It is scientifically proven that the body releases endorphins when you exercise which in turn will improve your mood but pairing exercise with a social event, i.e a fitness class, helps to release even more endorphins. Also with regular exercise you will (hopefully) begin to see a change in your body which will help your self confidence grow also improving your mood.

5. To de-stress.

Your personal life or work life can get too much for you at times and sometimes you need somewhere to vent your frustration. We have already seen that exercising can improve your mood but in a Zumba® class you are given the opportunity to scream and shout at any stage with the instructor encouraging you to scream even louder. We include dances with booty shakes and shimmies on purpose so you can shake off any frustration which has built up inside of you. One thing I have said to my students over and over again is to do all your shouting, screaming and stomping at your Zumba® class because the instructor will not get upset or offended if you shout at them whereas your family and friends might.

 

6. To have some “you” time.

With work, kids and family commitments to name a few, sometimes you forget to take the time to do something that you want to do. A lot of people take a Zumba® class because its an hour that they can enjoy without having to worry if the school uniforms are washed, if you paid that utility bill or if you bought that litre of milk. They can forget the outside world and take an hour to let go and just enjoy themselves. On numerous occasions I have had people come into my class who have said they had a bad day and they couldn’t wait for their Zumba® fix.

7. To make friends.

Whether you choose to come with a friend or by yourself it will not be long until you get to know the people around you. Once people start going to classes regularly they will soon learn the faces they see at every class. At first you may not talk to them like friends but you will acknowledge that you recognize them with a smile or a nod. Then maybe you get talking to them between songs or at the end of class. Week after week you will get to know them and eventually a bond will form. Since starting to take Zumba® classes in 2010, I have met so many amazing people in different classes and now I call them my friends. I look forward to seeing them and laughing with them during classes knowing the experience is that much nicer because they are there.

 

8. To have fun.

Where else can you dance like nobody is watching, swing your hips and give your booty a good shake without anyone batting an eyelid? A Zumba® class is a place where you can be anyone you want to be and where you can enjoy yourself without worrying what the people around you think. Let’s face it if we feel silly doing a particular step you can guarantee the person next to you feel the same way but there’s no need to be embarrassed, embrace the silliness and learn to laugh at yourself.
