I am originally from Drogheda, Co Louth where I lived until my family decided to move to the big smoke when I was six years old. I have lived in Ashtown since then. When I moved to Dublin, my mam joined me up for Irish dancing, tap dancing and speech and drama after school. I kept up tap dancing and speech and drama right up until I finished school and took part in variety shows every year up to the age of 18. While in school I played football for the school team and by “played” I mean warmed the bench because I was terrible. Let’s just say I was better at dancing than playing football!

I went to college in National University of Ireland, Maynooth and graduated with an Honors Degree in Business and Management in 2010. Unfortunately when my schedule changed it meant I could no longer keep dancing or  doing speech and drama. After this I put on a lot of weight and my confidence got super low. It was a couple of weeks before I started my first full time job when I was told about Zumba®. My mam had been taking salsa classes with Sinead for a couple of months and had heard about this new craze that was starting to grow in Ireland. I had zero interest at first because I had gotten so lazy and unfit but my mother persisted and eventually got me to agree to go to class. Its amazing how one hour can change your mindset. Within a couple of weeks I was hooked. I started taking two and then three classes a week until eventually I was taking a class nearly every night.

Sinead approached me and asked if I would be interested in doing the instructor course and coming on board with her to teach in 2011. I was both surprised and honored that she thought I had potential to teach a class and had faith in me to do it under her brand Love2Dance. I instantly said yes and within a few weeks she had me lead a dance in one of her classes (some of you will remember Push Push from way back when!). I took my instructor training course in May 2011 and within two weeks, Sinead had trusted me to take on one of her classes and teach it regularly. By September 2011 I was teaching classes every night from Monday to Thursday. In July 2012 I took the Zumba® Toning course and fell in love all over again. I was so excited to bring this new program to my classes and I am so proud of this class.

It is tough holding down a full time job (from 9-5 I work in a financial services company) as well as teaching four classes a week but I adore teaching Zumba®. There are very few feelings that are better than sharing your passion with others and seeing them enjoy it!

7 random facts about me:

  • I’m left handed.
  • I hate Spaghetti Bolognese.
  • Since starting Zumba® in 2010 I have lost nearly 3 stone in weight and dropped 3 dress sizes.
  • My guilty pleasure is watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians and I adore Khloe (do not judge me for this one).
  • My favourite books are the Hunger Games trilogy. I read all three in the space of a week and I am totally Team Peeta.
  • I went on a J1 holiday in 2009 and throughout the summer traveled by TRAIN from San Francisco to New York.
  • My favourite movie is Grease and I have already used three songs from it in my classes to date and chances are I will use some more in the future.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know me – Paula <3
